At the gateway to the Acworth Mill District you will notice the beautifully restored Cowan Mill, now a one of a kind event venue that hosts weddings, social gatherings, and regular musical events. Cowan is Acworth’s oldest commercial building built by John Cowan in the late 1870’s. The mill initially produced flour, and later, other goods such as textiles and tapestries at various periods until the early 70’s.

The Mill District is a vibrant and growing area of downtown Acworth with unique restaurants, breweries, hip clothing boutiques, outdoor and camping supplies supplies, and parks for all to enjoy. The area is experiencing a major tourism-friendly business boom – thanks to restaurateurs and retailers seeking unique and historic locations to delight visitors. And all within the pedestrian-friendly Acworth Downtown area.

MORE THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE MILL DISTRICT

Acworth was a booming mill town that laid the foundations for a vibrant community that’s still thriving today. The Cowan Mill, built by John Cowan in 1870 after he returned to the Acworth area from The Montana Goldrush in the 1860’s.

Cowan, traveled from Acworth to the Black Hills of Montana to seek gold along with several friends called the Four Georgians. They are vital to the founding Helena, Montana, where there mine was located, and where they made their fortunes.

JD’s BBQ was the former Eli Whitney Schoolhouse. The one-story, brick, Craftsman-style schoolhouse was constructed in 1928 by the Acworth Mill for the education of the children of mill workers.
